Giving Cert Buddy a Direct Line to Microsoft Learn

Early on with Cert Buddy™, I decided the AI features shouldn’t rely entirely on what a language model already knows. That's critical for a certification product. Microsoft technologies change constantly: product names change, capabilities shift, services evolve, and documentation updates daily. A model can be remarkably capable while still working from incomplete or outdated information.

So, I connected Cert Buddy to the Microsoft Learn MCP Server.

There's also something deeply satisfying about that. I spent a significant part of my career working on Microsoft Learn, certification, credentialing, and technical documentation. Years later, I am building my own learning product and connecting it directly back to the knowledge platform I worked on.

Giving AI Somewhere Reliable to Look

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. At a high level, it gives AI systems a standardized way to connect to external tools and information instead of depending solely on training data.

Microsoft's Learn MCP Server provides access to current technical documentation, allowing an AI system to search Learn, retrieve documentation, and pull relevant code samples when it needs additional context. Microsoft makes this remote server publicly available without requiring authentication.

If a learner is studying Azure AI concepts, I would much rather have the AI experience grounded in Microsoft's current documentation than rely on a model generating explanations from memory. The model interprets the information and adapts it to the user, but Learn provides the source of truth.

Cert Buddy Is Not a Search Engine

Microsoft Learn already handles documentation exceptionally well, and I have no interest in recreating it. Cert Buddy has a different job. Cert Buddy tracks what the learner is studying: which concepts they struggle with, which questions they miss, how much evidence exists for each skill area, and what they should focus on next.

Microsoft Learn provides the technical knowledge, while Cert Buddy provides the personal learning context. Putting those two together is where it gets interesting.

A learner who misses an Azure question doesn't need ten documentation links. They need a clear explanation of their specific misconception, why their answer seemed plausible, how the correct concept differs, and what to remember for the exam.

Grounding Matters

It's easy to focus on how intelligent the latest models have become, but what information we give those models access to matters just as much. A capable model with the wrong context will still confidently give you the wrong answer. In certification prep, small inaccuracies create misconceptions that are hard to undo.

Connecting Cert Buddy to Microsoft Learn gives the system a solid grounding mechanism. It doesn't magically eliminate every possible error, but when current Microsoft information matters, there is an authoritative source available.

Microsoft describes the Learn MCP Server as a way for AI agents to bring trusted content into their context, it’s the same underlying knowledge service used by Ask Learn and Copilot for Azure. Integrating it was an easy choice.

Where Learning Products Are Going

Traditional learning products tend to rely on static content: someone writes a question bank, publishes explanations, and periodically updates them as the underlying technology changes. AI opens up a more dynamic model, but only when it has access to reliable information.

Cert Buddy operates at the intersection of three things:

• Microsoft Learn provides authoritative knowledge.

• The Learner's History provides personal context.

The AI layer sits between them, using those sources together to decide what the learner needs next and how best to present it. That broader architecture is what I think of as a modern learning engine.

A Full-Circle Moment

I spent years helping build technical learning and credentialing experiences inside Microsoft. Today, I’m on the other side, building an independent product that leverages Microsoft Learn as part of its core architecture.

The technology connecting the two didn't exist in this form back then. Now, I can give Cert Buddy a direct path to up-to-date Microsoft knowledge and combine it with real-time learner context - not AI for the sake of marketing, but AI connected to the right data and the right sources of truth.
