Brewing Insights with Power BI
OPPORTUNITY
I wanted to deepen my Power BI skills in a way that felt practical and personally meaningful. Rather than working with a generic sample dataset, I used years of homebrewing data exported from BeerSmith to explore patterns in the beers I had brewed, the styles I preferred, and how my brewing activity had changed over time.

The project created an opportunity to combine technical learning, data analysis, visual design, and teaching within a subject I already understood and enjoyed.
Role
I prepared and imported the source data, designed the dashboard, selected and configured the visualizations, analyzed the resulting patterns, and wrote a detailed tutorial explaining how other homebrewers could recreate the experience.

The work allowed me to move between the roles of learner, designer, analyst, and instructor, using the act of teaching to deepen my own understanding of the technology.
APPROACH
I exported recipe data from BeerSmith into CSV format, imported it into Power BI, and designed an interactive dashboard using charts, cards, gauges, filters, and trend visualizations. I organized the accompanying article as a step-by-step learning experience so readers could follow the full process, from preparing the data through interpreting the final results.
WHAT I BUILT
The finished dashboard visualized recipe counts, distinct beer styles, brewing methods, average calories, brewing volume, and trends over time. Interactive filters and drill-down capabilities allowed the data to be explored from multiple perspectives.

The analysis also revealed unexpected patterns in my own brewing history, including the number of distinct styles I had brewed and a decline in my brewing activity over time.
LESSONS LEARNED
This project reflects how I prefer to learn: by connecting a new technology to a real interest, creating something tangible, and then turning that experience into guidance that helps others learn.

It brings together data visualization, instructional writing, design, analysis, and curiosity.

This project reinforced that learning becomes more engaging when new technology is connected to meaningful, familiar data. It also showed that effective dashboards require more than adding charts. The designer must understand the audience, choose useful measures, organize information clearly, and help people interpret what the data reveals.

Teaching the process forced me to make each step understandable, which strengthened both my technical knowledge and my instructional approach.
