Launching and Scaling Microsoft Learn
OPPORTUNITY
Microsoft’s technical-learning ecosystem was spread across Microsoft Virtual Academy, documentation, certification sites, product-specific learning portals, hands-on labs, and other web properties. The Microsoft Learn MVP created an opportunity to bring these experiences together through structured modules, role-based learning paths, progress tracking, interactive exercises, and closer integration with technical documentation.
I entered the project after leading Microsoft Virtual Academy and contributing to Microsoft’s modern credentialing and broader learning-product strategy. I then moved from Worldwide Learning into Developer Relations to lead the Programs PM team supporting the launch and expansion of Microsoft Learn in September 2018.
Role
As Principal PM Manager, I ran the Microsoft Learn Programs team, leading a group of program managers responsible for the cross-company programs and operational systems needed to launch and scale the platform.
My responsibilities included:
-
Leading, coaching, and organizing the Programs PM team
-
Establishing priorities, planning rhythms, and ownership across a highly ambiguous launch environment
-
Creating the contributor onboarding model for Microsoft teams and external partners
-
Supporting certification-content launches across Azure, Microsoft 365, and Business Applications
-
Developing support and Voice of the Customer programs
-
Leading the hands-on labs strategy and integration work
-
Establishing content governance, intake, funding, and repository-management processes
-
Helping consolidate and migrate learning experiences from other Microsoft sites
-
Coordinating across Developer Relations, Worldwide Learning, engineering, content, localization, marketing, and business groups
My team’s mission was to create a programmatic framework that allowed Microsoft teams and partners to contribute effectively while giving customers a more cohesive learning experience.
APPROACH
We treated the launch as both a product effort and an operating-model challenge. Building the platform was only one part of the work. Microsoft also needed repeatable ways to onboard contributors, manage repositories, fund content and localization, support customers, integrate labs, govern quality, and retire redundant learning properties.
I organized the Programs team around clear workstreams, quarterly priorities, capacity planning, and cross-company partnerships. The goal was to reduce ambiguity, distribute ownership, and create scalable processes that would continue working as participation and content volume grew.
What We Delivered
The Programs team helped establish the operational foundation around the Microsoft Learn MVP and its early expansion.
Our work included:
-
Onboarding Microsoft 365, Worldwide Learning, Business Applications, Cloud Advocates, and other contributor groups
-
Supporting large role-based certification and content launches
-
Integrating early virtual machine labs into Learn modules
-
Developing localization and partner funding approaches
-
Creating customer support and issue management workflows
-
Improving dashboards, metrics, and reporting
-
Establishing content governance and repository management practices
-
Supporting migrations from Microsoft Virtual Academy, Xamarin University, AI School, IoT School, and other learning properties
-
Planning for hundreds of new modules across Microsoft’s major technical audiences
Microsoft Learn evolved from an initial platform launch into a cross-company learning ecosystem supported by repeatable programs for content contribution, customer feedback, labs, governance, and migration.
The Programs team helped move Learn beyond a centrally produced content experience. We created mechanisms that allowed teams across Microsoft to participate while maintaining greater consistency in the learner experience.
The work also reduced fragmentation by helping Microsoft consolidate learning properties and move toward a clearer destination for technical learning.
LESSONS LEARNED
This project reflects my ability to lead both a team and a complex platform transformation.
It brought together people leadership, product and program management, digital learning, content operations, customer experience, and cross-company change. It also represents a pivotal transition in my career: moving from leading Microsoft Virtual Academy and helping define Microsoft’s future learning strategy to running the Programs PM team that helped make that future operational.
Launching a learning platform requires much more than shipping features and publishing content. It requires a complete operating system around the product: contributor onboarding, customer support, governance, localization, labs, analytics, maintenance, and clear organizational ownership.
The experience also reinforced that PM leadership is often about creating structure in an environment where scope is still forming. The Programs team added value by converting broad ambitions into defined programs, accountable owners, scalable processes, and work that could be prioritized and measured.
